Adobe has dropped some big Photoshop updates on us for Adobe Max 2024 which is currently being held in Miami – and the focus is well and truly on AI. When Adobe first dropped its Generative Fill feature in Photoshop just about a year ago, it seemed like it was the biggest announcement in the history of AI. And, at the time, it certainly was as no other brand had made such a significant AI upgrade with such a practical feature. Adobe tells PetaPixel that for most of its plans, it has not started enforcement when users hit a monthly limit even if it is actively tracking use. Remove already works a bit like Google’s Magic Eraser feature on Pixel phones, allowing users to quickly remove unwanted objects from their images by brushing over them. The new Distraction Removal feature, which Adobe teased last year, makes it even more like Magic Eraser by automatically identifying common distractions for you, like people, wires, and cables, and removing them with a single click. “After the plan-specific number of generative credits is reached, you can keep taking generative AI actions to create vector graphics or standard-resolution images, but your use of those generative AI features may be slower,” Adobe says. This is the latest of several generative AI rollouts for Adobe since the company introduced its first Firefly model last year.

Distraction removal is available in Photoshop v26, and people removal is available on the Photoshop web app. On the Photoshop front, Adobe introduced several AI-powered tools to streamline core tasks. The new Selection Brush Tool provides a more intuitive method for selecting areas of an image by brushing over them, offering flexibility in compositing and adjustments.

Although I still don’t know how to prompt well in Photoshop, I have picked up a few things over the last year that could be helpful. You probably know that Adobe has virtually no documentation that is actually helpful if you’ve tried to look up how to prompt well in Photoshop. Much of the information on how to prompt for Adobe Firefly doesn’t apply to Photoshop. This is especially frustrating because Adobe’s guideline violation warnings don’t tell you why you got a warning. When expanding larger areas, you might get distorted outputs as well, but you can also run into numerous violation warnings.

First up, a number of essential AI tools will see general availability for Photoshop desktop and web users. Photoshop Beta’s Generative Workspace allows your generated images to have a new home. Previously, when generating images, you had to manually click to open them and save them each as a file or an artboard—but the Generative Workspace allows you to keep track of all your generated images across the Adobe suite. Adobe is giving designers and photographers a new productivity boost with new features and generative AI updates for Illustrator and Photoshop. When you’ve made a jagged or sloppy selection using the Lasso tool, you can choose Smooth selection in the Contextual Taskbar to straighten out the edges. You can choose Expand selection in the Contextual Taskbar if you use Select subject or the Quick Selection tool to make your initial selection. Despite this being common advice, in many applications it’s generally better to also select a little over the edge of where you want to use Generative Fill. Sometimes, roughly circling the general area that you want to fill works better than tracing the outline of something.

The Generative Workspace expected in Photoshop will work as file management for your AI-generated images. It’s not entirely clear if it will be implemented across other Adobe software, but I expect it will. This would mean you can access generated images made in other Adobe programs regardless of where you open Generative Workspace. Generative Workspace is one of the top AI features announced at Adobe Max 2024, and will be the new home of your AI-generated imagery and files.
